For Christmas we are giving a very nice pole with hooks for different kinds of feeders and seeds, suet etc. we're trying to decide what kind of seed, cylinders, suet etc to give them for it. What kind of birds would they be able to attract in that area? Besides the normal sparrows, cardinal, and woodpecker, I mean.

All I get is Cardinals, and I use sunflower seeds. That's all I want though, so it works well. I tried putting a Hummingbird feeder out this fall, and nothing showed.

My first bird feeder gave me quite a show one night. I turned on the floodlights to let the dog out and there was a raccoon up the pole, gorging himself on the feed. I bought a new pole and feeder the next day...lol

We live in the southern part of Indian River County, in a community that has a nature preserve in the middle of it, and several wooded acres across the road. I have had a bird feeder out for over three months and have only ever seen ONE bluejay on it ! I have mixed seed in it. The migrating birds should be here by now, but if they are, they aren't interested in my seed ! I have seen a couple of finches in the neighborhood, but overall there are hardly any songbirds in my area ! I also put out a hummer feeder and as far as I know there are no hummingbirds in the area either. Sigh. It is one of the few things I miss about Ohio !

By the way, if you have a TSC store near you (Tractor Supply Company), they have 40 pounds of sunflower seed on sale this week for only $18. They are usually the best place to buy sunflower seed.
