Would like to take our canoe out, where is the best launch here? Are the waters safe now?. Sorry I don't do a lot of driving so don't know the water situation.

Thanx

Barbara

I go to River Park Marina off of Prima Vista when I go kayaking. I really enjoy it up there!

In Sebastian, search for "Canoe Launch Cove", it's off of 512 towards the middle school, nice place to put in.

In PSL, Savannas Preserve State Park on Walton Road a bit east of Lennard Rd.

The info tells you about guided kayak tours, but you can bring your own anytime (during daylight hours) and just drive out to the canoe launch. Map shows it along with picnic table and restroom icon.

The Environmental Center (office) is closed on Tues and Wed but the trail to the canoe launch is open.

There is also the Halpatiokee Nature Trail in PSL at the intersection of US 1 and Village Green Dr. Here the canoe would need to be portaged from the parking lot straight out the trail, about 1/4 - 1/3 mi., to the canoe launch from where you can paddle out to the river where you may even see a manatee. However, the trail tends to be muddy, and though this time of year it should be dry, with the amount of rain we've had I'd take a reconnaissance trip before going. This has always been my favorite—not very busy due to the inconvenience.

I also second the suggestion about the River Park Marina. For a longer car ride there's always Jonathan Dickinson State Park between Hobe Sound and Tequesta.

Is it safe? I can only say that one just doesn't read about kayakers or canoeists being attacked by gators. If people don't feed them they are usually more wary of you than you are of them and are likely to dive down when they notice you heading in their direction. If you're really worried, go on a cold day when they are not active. But all in all you're probably safer out there than driving on I95.

I've never had an issue with alligators canoeing in Florida. I don't even recall hearing about any issues with people who weren't messing with the gators....I assume canoes don't look like lunch to them!

We are not the least bit worried about gators. Canoed everywhere down at Jonathan Dickinson and riverbend park in Jupiter and never saw one.

Thanx everyone, savannahs looks promising!
