Well we sure weren't expecting such a high water bill when we moved up here from Jupiter. Down there our monthly bill was about 50.00 and the sewer bill was paid every three months (around 60.00).

So what tips can you give me for keeping our bill down. We have a well for our sprinkler, and it's just me and the dogs during the day. I do about 2 loads of laundry a day. I heard that you can ask the water dept to designate a certain amount of your bill toward agriculture.

We are a family of four.

Thanx everyone

Barbara

Where are you ? We live in Indian River County and pay about $34 a month, which is the total for both water and sewer. There are only two of us, and we do a lot less laundry - about two loads a week. Two loads a day sounds like a lot, even for a family of four. Any way to cut down on that ? If you have a dishwasher, how often do you run it ? That's another big water user.

We live in Port st lucie. My dishwasher runs once a day in the evening. I could reduce my laundry to one load day. Our monthly bill runs about 95.00.

You also might want to check with the water department to make sure your water meter is operating correctly.

Wow. I live in Sebastian and we're three people who use a lot of water. My bill averages $24 and I sometimes add water to the pool.

Yeah, but you've never had the privilege of trying PSL water. They have it piped down from the glaciers high up on Mt Trashmore by I-95. We pay for the freshness....

I too found out how high water rate is here and the cost is a big complaint from most of the neighbors I have met and they attribute it to overbuilding of the utilities department physical plant and the need to pay for high salaries, extensive real-estate holding. The bill is based on units of water not gallons, so if you use one more gallon of water in the lower unit say 3000 gallons then they bump you up to the next unit and it is usually in $30 per month increments.
I moved here from New Orleans where the water bills were outrageous and going up each year and the agency too had refined their response saying that the rates were needed to pay for infrastructure improvements since the city was so old and the system was in disrepair. Of course it was revealed that the head of the water department will receive 300k a year retirement after receiving 130k a year salary. The agency has been regarded by many residents a a quasi public ripoff agency that does little but charges a lot. My bills in New Orleans were similar to the bills here. One time I called about my bill in New Orleans and the customer service agent on the telephone quickly responded to my inquiry that the bill was correct. When I asked how and why the agent replied that it was correct because it was the bill. Kinda hard to argue with that reasoning.
I would like to know if anyone has had the city determine that they made a mistake on the homeowners bill here- doubt it.
If people do not complain then you get what you have today- high bills.
