Does Starbucks have any competition here. Every time I try Starbucks either in the west or on US1, every table is full usually with young people with laptops.

What are you looking for? Coffee? Wifi? Very vague question. Lots of Dunkin Donuts litter this city.

Yes, and Yes.

Back home in New Orleans we drank a lot of coffee like a lot of people and we were blessed with several local chains of coffee shops mainly in the city and rarely in the suburbs. Perhaps because of the five universities but the coffee shops were plentiful and we incorporated them into our lives after work and on the weekends meeting friends and making new ones, and having a good cup of chicory coffee and a pastry or toasted bagel. It was a relaxing place to go to after church on Sunday, sort of a change of pace, a slower alternative to the stresses of living. Most coffee shops had on display art from local artists and yes they had free wifi. The coffee shop craze swept the city and most were full all day. It was not just a local thing because we found a similar place in Flagstaff, Az. that had great coffee and had a full in house bakery and sold fresh baked goods on site.

Somehow Dunkin needs to loose the McDonalds plastic corporate model and tone it down, dump the harsh decor and colors. Starbucks is geared more to drive up and are too small - one exception is the one in Target in Jensen Beach Panera bread might be an alternative and needs further investigation.

Went to Panera in St Lucie West, about 10:30 am Sunday. I was impressed as jaded as I am. The dark coffee was great, alas no WiFI but that may keep out the malingerers. Service great, courteous and good decor, modern look but not gaudy, art work on the walls, lots of seating and we took our time and it was never too busy that someone could not sit. Great selection of foods. I would rate it 4 stars- had to knock it down one star since the hot coffee was self serve and had only two strengths. I went to one in West Palm and had great expresso a few months ago.

Sid, my husband and I are in that Panera regularly--they do have Wifi. Maybe it was just down/not functioning when you were there...
