My husband and I are considering a move from Lancaster, PA to Lake Okeechobee, FL.
I am curious about the economy there, jobs and crime in the area. I am in the veterinary field, my husband is in hotel management. My husband requests a house on the lake and my daughter wants the beach of course! We are very active as far as biking, hiking, kayaking and boating and feel the area would allow us to do that year round. Does anyone know the prevelance of heartworm disease in dogs in the area? That worries me a bit as we have two little dogs. Can anyone offer advice in any of these subjects please?

Ok, I'm going to be completely honest with you. I've been to Okeechobee 2x since I've lived here. I know a few people that were raised out there and/or have lived there at some point. Nobody has ever had anything good to say about it. Not that there is anything really wrong with it, but it is considered the "redneck south" part of FL. Basically it's a cow town that grew up a little bit. Lots of trailers, hunters, and rebel flags.

I normally don't post such brutal honesty, but unless you come down and take a look and like it, I'd say pass. Just my opinion of course.

I agree. Cows, cows and more cows. Nothing pretty about it. Very hot and no breeze.
