We just received our property tax estimate for 2014 and ouch ! Our 2013 tax was $1,893. The 2014 rate is $2,570 ! And that is if the budget stays the same. If the proposed budget change is made, we will pay $2,655 ! That is a one year increase of $762 !!! The main reason for this is that our property market value went from $154k in 2013 to $199k in 2014. Was this because we bought our house in 2013, and the sale price ($255k) automatically shot up the taxes ? We bought it from the original owner, who had lived here since it was built in 2005.
Did anyone else get a huge increase in property taxes and market value for 2014 ?

Nope mine stayed the same. In fact I think it's $50.00 less.

My property was bought in 2009, comps generally dipped by 40-50% and just now came back up to 2009 levels.

I guess yours was re-appraised? Call and ask.

Which line item(s) went up?

My "market value" line item went up by $13,000.

Our market value went up by $45,000 ! Safe to assume we were re-appraised. Lucky us.

Yeah they are pretty quick with the appraisals when the value goes UP.

I think you bought your house as resale, right? Not new build.

Because a broker told me today you pay taxes on just the lot the first year then on the whole house the next year. Which is obvious, I guess but just thought I'd mention it.

Yes, we bought our house as a resale. I am guessing it had not been re-appraised for quite a while. We do get the homestead exemption so I guess the increase could have been even worse !
