DEC 16-17th phooey .. I missed the Clydesdales here in PSL going to Ft Pierce!

Budweiser Clydesdales return to the Treasure Coast in time for holidays- I LOVE seeing these horses!!
The iconic team of eight horses and red carriage, decorated for the holidays, will make appearances in Port St. Lucie, Vero Beach and in downtown Fort Pierce. Santa will follow the famous horses, the trained Dalmatian and red beer wagon, and most visits are timed at twilight to highlight the holiday decorations.
The team will be at Marina Square in Fort Pierce from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 16 with the backdrop of more than 100,000 lights synchronized to holiday music. There will be plenty of photo opportunities as the team trots along Orange Avenue and Second Street to the 12A Buoy restaurant and back. (by the way 12A Buoy restaurant is really good!)

The team, recognizable around the world, also will make stops at Sam’s Club in Port St. Lucie and Riverside Park in Vero Beach. The holiday visit is thanks to Southern Eagle Distributing. Padrick said the quintessential team of horses visits the top three performing Anheuser-Busch distributors in the nation.
Dec. 14: 2-5 p.m. at Sam’s Club, 10900 U.S. 1, Port St Lucie
Dec. 16: 4-8 p.m. at Marina Square and downtown Fort Pierce
Dec. 17: 4-8 p.m., starting at Riverside Park and parading down Ocean Drive in Vero Beach

No place like home for the holidays

Just about everyone would like to be home for the holidays, including the hundreds of homeless pets in local shelters.

The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast has a foster program designed to achieve that goal.

Area residents can temporarily foster a homeless pet for the season through the "Home for the Holidays" foster program.

The program gives the shelter pets a much-needed change of scene and increased exposure to potential permanent caregivers. Often, the temporary guardians or visiting family and friends will decide to permanently adopt the homeless pet. But any exposure to animal lovers, such as a walk around the neighborhood, increases the animal’s chances of finding a permanent home.

Foster a shelter pet for the holiday and give the animal and staffers a break for the season.

“If you’re not sure, it’s a great way to try a pet out,” said Emily Recco, foster and rescue coordinator for the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. The Palm City shelter has about 300 animals in its care.

After a general screening, approved foster families may choose an animal from the shelter to take home between 10 a.m. Dec. 20 and 2 p.m. Dec. 24. All animals must be returned to the Palm City shelter between Dec. 26 and Jan. 4, or they can be adopted.

Almost 50 percent of the animals fostered in last year’s holiday program were adopted.

The program, which has been offered for several years, is a win-win for staffers and volunteers, Recco said. The fewer animals housed in the shelter, the less help needed to care for them.

“Our staff and volunteers won’t have to give up as much of their holiday and family time,” Recco said.

The organization also is offering up to an 80 percent discount on adoption fees. All dog and cat adoptions will be reduced to $25 through the end of December. Adoptions for animals older than 7 years are free.

The Humane Society of St. Lucie County offers a similar foster program and discounts but with looser time restraints. Approved foster families can take a pet home any date through the New Year.

“It can be good company for those who have a quieter holiday,” said Janet Winikoff, director of education at The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County. When the animals are returned, the volunteers can provide helpful insight into an animal’s personality and traits for future adoptive parents.

“We know very little about a stray animal besides the basic facts,” Winikoff said. “To give a detailed picture to a prospective adopter is a big help.”

All of the shelters are looking for volunteers.

I foster myself and ended up a foster fail! ha!.. 2 have stayed with me of the next to last 5 kittens I fostered. I fostered Cheyenne before I adopted her as well. Yes, I have become the crazy cat lady and don't mind. I will take in and help any animal I can. They don't deserve what some people do to them.

Please consider giving a cats, kittens, dogs and puppies a home, even if its only temporary. They NEED some love and tenderness that they don't get in a cage.

You can make the difference in them getting adopted or not because if they are fostered they will really know what it's like to have someone love and pet on them. Someone feed them and care AND JUST TALK TO THEM. Someone to care if they live or die. It makes a difference. Fostering changes them from being afraid that someone will hurt them to being glad someone wants them.......I've seen it and it's wonderful

COMING UP---John Ford Coley, best known as half of the 1970s Grammy Award-nominated duo England Dan & John Ford Coley, will perform Jan. 17 at The Lyric Theatre in Stuart and Feb. 11 at Summer Crush Winery in Fort Pierce. The pair of soft rockers released 11 albums and had six Top 40 singles between 1976 and 1979. The band’s popular hits include “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” and “Love Is the Answer.”
Since the duo disbanded in the early ‘80s, Coley wrote several songs and an autobiography “Backstage Pass.” He also has acted in several television shows and some films. He began producing music for other artists and started touring again in the 1990s.

Several World War II aircraft will be open for tours Jan. 20-22 at Witham Field in Stuart.
Considered the backbone of the American effort, a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-24 Liberator, B-25 bomber and a P-51 fighter will fly into Witham Field on Jan. 20 and be open for tours inside and outside of the historic aircraft.
The Flying Fortress is one of only eight B-17s in flying condition in the United States. The B-24J Liberator is the sole remaining example of its type flying in the world.
