What are your major complaints (if any) about living on the TC? Specifically PSL.
Traffic, crime, run down areas, lack of any services, weather, etc..
Trying to gauge potential cons or downsides to moving to the region.
Also any areas to completely avoid when looking for a home?
Thanks!

I haven't seen or heard of any bad areas here. That's not saying much since we have only been living in PSL for a few months. Before that, we lived in Fort Pierce. Now that area does have some really bad sections.

I really can't say anything bad about the area. I love it.

I know you will be getting some people to discourage you. Every area has people that don't like the area and are happy to let you know.

We are closer to the coast and so far, we pretty much always have that breeze. What it will be like during the really hot months... I'll have to let you know on that. As per usual in Florida, summer brings the afternoon rain but I always let visitors know that you really don't have to cancel plans. Just wait till the rain stops and continue the activities.

It does get hot and humid here, as I said it is Florida, but most places have air conditioning. If you have a pool, it is a plus.

Traffic....yeah, we have traffic. I do what I can to avoid Route 1. That road seems to be the worst, especially during snow bird season. I have found back roads to places that we seem to frequent the most. Lately it is Home Depot! LOL! PSL covers a large area. There is no actual 'town center'. Just a sprawling community. There are small towns if you visit Jensen Beach or Stuart. Even Fort Pierce has a small downtown that is kind of cute.

Hopefully you will get people that are a lot more knowledgeable than I to answer your questions. I look forward to hearing from them also.

my husband and I moved to Port St Lucie last fall and we love it! we are near US1 and Walton Rd we love the location! Convenient to everything we need and the intercoastal and beach. We are 1 mile from the Preserve for kayaking and hiking. We do get great breeze's from the Ocean. Yes, US1 does seem busier during snowbird season than it did last fall. We have been here during the summer also and it wasn't as busy. With that being said, we have never sat in bumper to bumper traffic to get anywhere in the area. I haven't felt unsafe anywhere in PSL. Over all we are very happy in PSL.

If you have other question's feel free to ask, I'll do my best to answer them!

Good luck with your search!

I appreciate your reply. A sprawling community sounds right up our alley. By that do you mean the stores and restaurants are spread throughout the city opposed to being crammed into one small area? Is there a decent sized mall and movie theater(s) as well. I would imagine so with a population of close to 170K.
Any parts of the city we should avoid when house hunting? East vs west of the Tpke?

When we were house hunting there weren't any area's we were told to avoid in PSL and haven't found any since moving here. Yes, store's and restaurant's are spread throughout the city, although there does seem to be more in St Lucie West and they seem a little crammed. The nearest mall is in Jensen Beach, there is also a movie theater there. Both are nothing special, just your average mall and theater. I have heard that more "upscale" shopping is in West Palm Beach, maybe other's who have lived here longer can comment on that as we haven't ventured to West Palm for shopping yet. We haven't found a lack of anything we want or need in the area.

The other thing we have been told is for the best healthcare/doctor's we will have to go to Orlando. Some go to Miami. I work in home health nursing with children and my patient's have all gone to Miami Children's hospital and their specialist's are in West Palm Beach. A friend take's her family to Orlando for their medical need's.

Spent the weekend driving around Stuart and Palm City.
Like most of South Florida - nice up and coming areas turn quickly into bad neighborhoods and I didn't make out a clear dividing line.
One really has to drive around themselves to determine exactly where they want to buy/rent.
What one person would tolerate/like another wouldn't.

My roommate just got engaged and her bf lives in Stuart.
She loves his house and the immediate neighborhood... but because you have to enter the neighborhood down a block she considers "iffy" - she refuses to move into the house.

Port St Lucie is safe....there are areas where you might think are less desirable than others, but that is up to you. This is not a crime area. Ft Pierce is.

Port St Lucie is St Lucie County. Stuart is in Martin Co...next door to the South. Martin Co is next door but the prices aren't alike.

Port St Lucie allowed a lot of homes to be built in the building boom and many of those homes are W of the turnpike. Martin Co did not allow any building at all at that time. With new building came stores, restaurants, movie theaters, etc. so St Lucie West has a lot of that. Otherwise they are off US#1 by or in the Mall at the Jensen Beach Blvd intersection.

In general in area where the ocean/beach is, building is going to start from the beach and work its way west. That generally makes the homes older in the beach area and newer going west.

It comes down to your price point, and what exactly you are looking for. You need to be here to wander a bit to get a better feel of a place on a personal basis rather than everyones opinion. We all have one of areas we like best.
