Hi!

I'm new here and new to composting. i want to start a new compost batch but of course to load up the tumbler composter you should have all your resources ready to add at the same time. I am pretty much ready to go but I would like to add more spoiled produce (i.e. fruits, veggies etc) to my batch. Any gardeners out there with tips? first hand experience would be greatly appreciated. Do you dumpster dive? are there any stores or markets that give the stuff away?

Thanks again!!!

Coffee grounds, eggshells, etc. It really won't take that long to accumulate what you need on your own.

thanks North Beach Person I've got coffee grounds and egg shells galore, just seeking to add a little variety to my batch without going thru a month of veggies and fruits in one weekend. i figured with all the markets around here it wouldn't be impossible to find a source of spoiled produce.

You'd be surprised how soon it'll accumulate, especially if you don't live alone.

If you have a tumbler just start throwing stuff in, it doesn't hurt, actually helps, if you add a little bit every couple days.

Flower trimmings, dead leaves from plants, that lettuce from the bag that looks shaky, potato peelings, the dead houseplant along with the dirt from the pot, that half-spoonful of green beans from dinner that isn't worth saving as a leftover. It all goes in.

Have you tried hitting up the produce markets like Nelson's in Fort Pierce or Barbour's on I.R. Drive in Jensen Beach?

Check your local Publix and talk to the produce manager. Also, Starbucks has lots of grounds they give away.

Great idea. I remember seeing people dumpster diving at Barbours. They'll probably give it away.

Try Publix. All of their produce is rotten. Of course you will have to pay top dollar for it.
