The City of Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie Public Schools have partnered to provide additional open-space fields, sports courts and playground areas for residents to enjoy in the evenings, holidays and the weekends.

Certain outdoor areas at Bayshore Elementary School, 1661 SW Bayshore Blvd., are now open for public use on school days from 6 p.m. to sunset, and non-school days from 8 a.m. to sunset. The areas at Bayshore Elementary that are included in this pilot program are: outdoor basketball courts, multi-purpose fields featuring soccer goals and baseball backstop and the playground near the basketball courts.

“We are pleased to announce this increased partnership with the St. Lucie County School District as we work to make additional leisure opportunities available to the public by utilizing existing school sites throughout the City,” said Sherman Conrad, Port St. Lucie’s Parks & Recreation Director.

After several months, staff will analyze the public’s use of the space at Bayshore Elementary, including any maintenance issues. At that time, staff will determine whether to expand this program to two additional schools in Port St. Lucie. St. Lucie Public School officials have identified Palm Pointe Educational Research School in Tradition and Southern Oaks Middle School on St. James Drive as potential additional schools for this program.

The City’s Parks & Recreation staff will not be stationed on site during these additional hours, and maintenance and security will be handled by the Department’s Parks Roving Crew. Additional fencing has been installed at Bayshore Elementary to restrict public access to certain areas of the school campus.
