What do you pay, or charge, for childcare on the Treasure Coast? I'm being asked to provide care and want to know I'm charging a fair rate. Is $5 an hour fair for watching a 1-year-old part time in my home?

Default Child Care

Charge the going rate in the area of your home. It varies by just a few miles. You are a business but will be treated as a servant by most parents. If you become licensed your house has to have so much sq ft per kid, locks on all the cabinets and closet doors, gates at stairs and no garden tools that might hurt a kid. All that costs money. You probably need insurance. Homeowners doesn't cover it. See if there isn't a day care association in your city or county. That costs money to join but they have training sessions every month on nutrition, child development, and how to run a business.

You need a contract, financial agreement, emergency health care release, immunizations just to start. One kid is a start. 5.00 hour is low when you consider the responsibility you are taking on. Have parents bring diapers, wipes and food (food the first year). Extra set of clothes because there will be "blowouts". Structure rates so just a few hours costs more per hour, daily rate is a better deal and finally we went to weekly cost whether kid comes or not-- just to hold the licensed space.

Big step. People walk into your house, leave doors open, track oil in from their leaking car, etc. At least you won't have to shovel the walk at 6:00am. Good Luck
