I had similar experience and lost 3000 dollars on rental scam. That scammer sent me excess of 3000 dollars and asked me to return this. I have a question here: Asked i deposited the check in to my account, Bank did not show me any status mentioning that the check is still pending for the clearance. I know as per the federal law they should have the funds available with in 48 hours but they should maintain the check clearance status. Scammers are misusing this bank loopholes.

Don't accept checks. If you want to do business by check go to their bank with them, cash their check on their account and get cash, money order or cashiers check with the cash while at the bank. Avoids this entire issue.

If someone ever asks you to give them cash back on a check they gave you because it's over the amount asked that has scam written all over it. Bouncing a check for furniture wasn't enough for them and they wanted some extra cash for the trouble as well.

Yep same thing just happened to me. It was Craigs list. I guess I should notify them. Anyway, the "buyer" said she sent more than the furniture price and asked if I could go to Walmart and get a money gram to pay her movers. That's when I knew it was a scam. I told her are you kidding. Im not doing your work for you. She said please etc. I said listen I am calling the police to make sure I am protected because of her already sending the money. I still have not opened the priority envelope that she sent. Once I mentioned "police" I never heard from them again.
