My fiance and I are looking for the best place to start our new life together. We are considering a move to Florida but being from a small town in NC our entire lives have no idea where to start. We do not currently have children, but do plan for our future to include children. We have 2 pets: a 3 mth old kitten, and a 3 yr old pitbull. I have heard some parts of Florida have BSL against pitbulls and that most housing units do not allow them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Our rental budget to start would be around $6-700. Because the economy in our current area has gone so far downhill, we are currently living on a one-person income (and that is through unemployment benefits). We will both be starting an online job search once we decide where we will be moving. My fiancee has mostly held entry level positions, I have a little more experience mostly in the Customer Service/Clerical fields. I'm thinking we would enjoy city or suburban life. Any advice on employment and/or finding private home owners to rent from?

After 8 hours of research and thousands of Craigslist posts, I have found a few homes for rent within my price range that do allow pets. However, my dilemma still lies in the both of us being unemployed. Living on one-person unemployment income isnt easy and moving to a new place with only unemployment income could prove challenging. Any suggestions on relocating to find employment AND housing?

Many in Port St. Lucie find employment at Liberty Medical, or similar companies. My little brother worked customer service at Liberty, and made an OK $11 or $12 an hour. Other companies that sometimes have openings include Nations Health, Liberator?, and QVC. Aegis is a telemarketing firm in the area that has customer service jobs, but I've heard the work environment is "just OK."

Living in PSL, it would be convenient and best to have your job search in Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, Stuart, Jensen Beach, and Palm City. If necessary, you can expand to Palm Beach County and Vero Beach.

Again, however, the economy is tough. A lot of people in the construction business and related trades are out of work.

As for housing, you will have plenty of options. WIth your pets, the best option is to rent from a private owner that will OK dogs. Make sure you ask the landlord if they are in foreclosure though! The city is huge, and there are only a couple of areas I would tell you to stay away from (such as Parks Edge, Windmill Point, and one older neighborhood off of Floresta), because those areas cater to chronically low income people, and may not be a good fit. There is no "unsafe" part of the city, however, so that is good. Ideally, you will find a job and we will be able to stear you in the best and most convenient place based on the location of that job.

Thank you for that information! It helps a great deal as far as understanding which areas I should be searching for employment. Because I am so new to all of this, I am still not sure how we will find jobs in FL while living in NC in order to relocate for housing. I would think I would need to find housing and look for a job within that proximity.. then again, you cant have a house without a job! (im so confused as to how these relocation things work!!)
