I just found out that the highest speed available in Newport Isles is 16mb download for $74. In Tradition you can get 50mb download for $69.99. What is going on in these developments? That just makes no sense to me. I have unlimited data with my cell phone company, with faster speeds than they offer and will cost me nothing extra. I guess I will just use my phone as a wireless hotspot until the contract with the neighborhood and the cable Company ends and they can offer something better.
I never had good experiences with either directtv or dish as far as reception goes so I will be staying away from them. Having fiber optic in the homes gives it such good possibilities to have much higher speeds. Just don't understand why they aren't offering anything better.

because they were not built by the same developers -- the infrastructure is not the same....and the developers decided what they wanted the communities to have.

I don't know, but I don't think Newport Isles has fiber optics cat 5 wireing...

Both neighborhoods have fiber optic, therefore are both capable of similar speeds. Cat 5 cable is different than fiber optic as it is copper. The cable company controls the speeds from a central "switch". It probably just comes down to how much it costs them and what kind of deal or contract they originally had with the developers. Newport isles contract is up in 2014 and they then will be able to open up the neighborhood to other providers.

ok a question about that then ----- if they didnt have it installed when the development was built, does that mean if they open cable service up to other providers they will have dig up the neighborhood to install THEIR wires?

the reason for asking is- I moved to Magnolia Lakes. Hometown services here too. BUT...cable is not included. What I found out is that, depending on where I live in Magnolia Lakes, I can also use comcast. Apparently there were 3 different providers they thought of using in the beginning so parts have wiring installed from other companies.

If there are no cables run then you would be limited to providers that offer service that uses fiber optics. I don't think they would redo the whole development. The is Verizon FIOS service, I think att&t may offer a service. I am not sure if hometown offers regular cable service as well as the fiber optic service. Do the homes in your area have fiber installed? If newport opens up to other providers maybe hometown will be forced to change their plans that are available and offer better speeds for a reasonable price.

Cant get the ATT service.. tried. Others cant either. We are not even a consideration.

Having lived in Tradition for 5 years and away from comcast and others.. it was actually kinda nice not to have the internet or cable dropping all the time. Now that I am where the cable is not provided.... geez everyone wants a lot of $$$$
