Looking for a good family life (kids are 8 and 6) near the coast. Are places like Vero Beach much more family friendly (low crime, family things to do, etc.) than South Florida or are they pretty much the same?

Thanks,
Coastal

I have been in Vero since December. We relocated here from AZ. Vero is the typical small, sleepy coastal town. It has a slow pace of life, low crime and would be a lovely place to raise children. Mine are older now, but would have loved being able to go to the beach, swim, surf, etc. There are lots of families that have come back to the area because of crime in the larger cities. Vero is also centrally located. 2 hours to Orlando, 1.5 hours to West Palm. Good luck in your search!

South Florida - well no, not all places are the same by any stretch of the imagination but everyone will have an opinion of their particular part of South Florida since those words alone encompass a HUGE area and multiple cities.

Default More specifically

Thanks for the info about Vero - sounds lovely.

I'm trying to figure out the difference between living in Vero (with a family) and some of the nicer areas of Ft. Lauderdale perhaps?

Things of concern; schools, crime, culture, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Coastal

You really should go to their forum on City -Data and ask. Ft Lauderdale is a LONG way from here. It's not like asking about the next town. It's also a large area and people have various opinions on it as well.

I will say, it's nothing like living in this area at all. Much more fast paced with lots more traffic. It totally depends on the lifestyle you really want.

I grew up in the Ft. Lauderdale area in the 90s & it used to be somewhat similar to what Vero is today,
Vero offers a nice slower pace and the area hasn't built up rapidly like South FL

I'd definitely stick to Broward Co. vs. Dade though in S. FL. Have you looked into the Jupiter area? It's in Northern Palm Beach co. & is a nice mix of Vero & Ft. Laud in terms of small beach town but yet close to a ton of shopping etc.

Best of Luck!

I grew up in Vero and now live in WPB. Vero is a much slower paced lifestyle. It's a good safe little town with relatively short drives to Orlando or West Palm if you need more excitement from time to time.

coastal.....i lived in south fl for 38 years and moved to vero 2 years ago. i moved here because i have a son 5 and would never have wanted him growing up in a place like south fl. i lived in broward in cooper city which is quite nice but the way of living there is so hectic. i love vero....it's a different world here.

I've lived in Vero for six years. It's a nice but very slow paced (i.e. boring) town. A few good restaurants but not much else to do. If I wasn't upside down on my house, I'd sell and more to West Palm Beach.

In all sincerity....low crime is in this area. Culture might be more in West Palm but ...you can drive there in a short period of time. I honestly dont think Broward and Dade County are what you are looking for, but again, that's up to your personal lifestyle.

West Palm Beach has it good areas, and honestly, ones you don't want to live in, as in many large cities.

Again, you asked about a very large area, you will have to be down here, spend some time in each area, and ask questions to get some true answers as to the lifestyle you actually want for you and your family.

Photos on the Internet will not give you a true picture of anything except a house on a street.
