I want to move to Portland for my job (if they let me!) and I have never been to Maine or anywhere in New England. I am 22 years old and have grown up in Virginia Beach, VA. I dream of living in a place with mountains, forests, snow, and culture. Does Portland sound like anything I would enjoy?

I want to get a dog, so I think an apartment would be out of the question. Are the homes/town-homes in Portland affordable to rent? Average price?

In short, I'd love help with:

1. Where in Portland is a safe area for me to look for a house?
2. I have to get my search started online sadly, but I am hoping to visit the area within the next few months. Any good websites to help?
3. Average price for a house to rent?
4. Should I look a little outside Portland for a place? My job (if I get it!) will be near Back Cove Park..I'd be willing to commute 20 minutes by car. I'd rather walk to work though.

Thank you for your help!

Portland is a couple hours from the mountains. There are woods around, I guess you could call them forests. Kind of.
Portland does get snow. It is usually regarded as having "cul-cha" (inside joke). Although let me tell you what, you ain't seen culture until you've been to the Tournament! (B, C and D, of course!)
It's kind of expensive to live in Portland.............$600 a month for a small one room apartment (or so). The closer you live to the city (and Back Cove), the more expensive.
There is a Portland page, here on City Data.

Aw, give the guy a link.

My son lives in Portland so I have a casual acquaintance with the town. It has a healthy social scene for young folks. Friendly town, great seafood, many brew pubs and local beers, good fishing, sailing and bicycling.
