Does anyone have some suggestions for family volunteering in the Portland, ME over the holidays? We are a married couple with 2 kids (14 and 11 y/o) who would like to perform some sort of volunteer service on Christmas Eve!

Give United Way a call. They should have plenty of suggestions.

Got spare food coupons? and want to assist military families in need? Food coupons are honoured and they are still 'good' for an additional 6 months beyond their printed expiration date, at all commissaries over-seas. Send them to:

Naval Support Act - Naples
Family Service Center
Attn: Food Coupon Drive
PSC 817, Box 10
FPO-AE 09622

Thank you.

If you would like to do charity work in the Christmas spirit, consider visiting a nursing home or hospice to wish the elderly happy holidays one-by-one. Many nursing home residents do not get phone calls during the holidays, let alone personal visits. They appreciate it tremendously. Nursing homes in Portland include The Cedars, the South Portland Nursing Home, Fallbrook Woods, Birchwoods, the Holbrook, and St. Josephs Manor. If you call ahead, you may find that some church or youth groups are planning to sing carols or hand out dinners on Christmas Eve. You could team up with charities who are already visiting or make plans on your own with a volunteer representative at a nursing home in order to visit.
