We found a place across the bay from the Old Port in South Portland near Southern Maine Community College. Was still more than $700, but less than $1000 at least.

Thanks so much for Posting the outcome of your search. SO many times we reach out to help answer questions on this board and only a few ever let us know the outcome. I hope you'll enjoy your new city and your new location. That area Of S Portland has some good things to offer by way of outdoor activity. Be sure to check out the green way to bug light. Willard beach. Scratch & Scoops in Willard Square. Fort William Park & BYOB and get a bite to eat at Two lights.
Portland is so close your commute should be relatively painless, you could even ride your bike if you were so inclined. Be sure to check out 1st friday art walk the 1st friday of each month in downtown and watch for concerts at the state theater and one Longfellow square. After your settled be sure to continue to explore the area and the rest of Maine, I hope you'll love it here.
