Hey, so I'm moving into an apartment in Portland, Maine alone at the start of the summer. I'm 20 years old, and I've heard that Portland's a hard city to socialize in because everything is 21 plus. That aside, I'm a fairly social person when in the right situations. I enjoy most outings from symphonies and operas to Port City and Bingas EDM shows, to viewing the art at the museum. I'll also be going to school at SMCC, but I've heard that there really is no sense of community, even from those who live on campus.

My question is, how exactly would I go about forming a network of friends? Where exactly should I go to meet new people? Life I've said, I've been to Port City and Bingas a few times but everyone there seems pretty lame. We head up from MA, get hammered and go. Anyway, tips?

A couple suggestions,
A fair number of students ride the bus from downtown portland to smcc....even if you have a car consider taking the buss a few times.
Join a club at SMCC! I can't stress this enough! Photo club for example, its the best way to meet people...don't be afraid to tell people your new here. I found people to be pretty friendly once I told them that....yes there were a few.
People also make friends at work...I know you'll be going to school, but there are plenty of shops and stores in the old port who will hire for a few hours a week.
Every 1st friday of the month is the Art walk, lots of people out and about.
There are also free concerts in downtown during the summer, attend them, strike up conversations, if possible.
here's the link from last year: Summer in the Parks "Concerts
If you have a dog...go to the dog park, or borrow one :-) the same people there every day, you'll eventually start talking.
It will take a bit of effort on your part....but put yourself out there...you'll meet people and you'll be 21 before you know it.
Best of luck and enjoy!
