My sister and I (ages 19 and 21, respectively) will be coming from Texas to visit Portland, Maine later this month. I am very excited for two reasons: I am actually considering looking for work up there when I finish my computer science degree next year, and, of course, I will take on the adventure/responsibility of planning and handling a special trip with just my younger sister.

Anyway, we are seeking advice on inexpensive places to stay, whether hotels or bed and breakfasts (if those ever come cheap), with preference for proximity to town/attractions/etc. I also have few other questions; tips for any are greatly appreciated! :

Can you get around Portland without a rental car, or is it a recommended investment (for a 21-year old, they probably don't come cheap!) ?

What are some good activities for active young people who particularly enjoy long walks and biking? We also love things like museums and (even at our age ) zoos.

Thanks!

I would try airbnb.com for lodging, it's my favorite resource for cheap, awesome places to stay.

Have a fun trip!

Nicole, easy to get around downtown with out a car. Cheap hotels are another story...hard to come by. sorry no suggestions there. Use the web, maybe you can get a good deal at the holiday inn , its pretty decent, but it may be more then $100 per night. Try the Priority club site & scour the web for specials or try priceline..any place they put you if you keep it over 3 stars and confined to downtown will be fine. Other than that the Airbnb might be your best bet.

St John's Hotel is the least expensive and is on a bus route....not in the most beautiful area of Portland but is a short bus ride away....the savings on room might be worth while. Portland is very walkable if you are in shape.
