Hello all:

I'm looking forward to my first trip to Maine in a few weeks, which will be a quick trip to Portland. I'm only going to be in town for about two days but had some questions.

* If I stay downtown, will everything pretty much be within walking distance (i.e., can I get by without renting a car)?
* Are taxis to/from the airport plentiful at all hours? (I will be flying out very early in the morning).
* Are there any beaches or waterfront properties within walking distance of downtown. I'm not looking to swim -- just to inhale some sea-scented air after so many years of being stuck in the Midwest.
* Best casual seafood joints downtown (i.e., authentic Maine seafood)?
* Any other activities/sights you would recommend for a quick weekend stay?

Can't wait... thanks for reading and for your ideas!

downtown every thing is in walking distance. Taxis are available at all hours but schedule with your hotel from desk for your early taxi.
Yes you can see the water and smell sea air...no beach....except there is "kind of" one by the eastern promenade...but you can take a short ferry ride to the island or a tourist boat...and I think you'll get what you want. Both can be found on commercial street.

Try the Porthole & sit on the deck....and again take the ferry over to Peaks island and there are a few restaurants there too.
