Thank you in advance for your help.

I am interviewing for jobs in the Lewiston area. I have some questions about the area.

My husband is looking for a job in higher education. It seems there are several options in the Lewiston area??

Is it possible to live in a decent town (with a good town center) within a 20 minute commute of Lewiston that is closer to Portland?
Also, are there towns that have good preschools/school systems?

Also, Is Auburn a nicer area to live than Lewiston if I decided to live closer to my work?

Thank you!!

You CAN live IN Lewiston in a nice neighborhood... its downtown area really give it a bad rap. You can read through the forum here and find much information and opinions about Lewiston so I wont bore you with some redundant spiel about the reality of the problems that city has or that much of its bad rap has been over blown..

If you don't want to live IN Lewiston Auburn does offer "less" of a problematic downtown area and IMO has some extremely pretty neighborhoods!

20 min might be pushing it but the best place that has a strong downtown and is commutable to L/A is Brunswick.. its a perfect sized town/city with a vibrant downtown..

Other than that you might as well be looking in the Portland area.

good luck and feel free to DM me with any specific questions.

I grew up in Auburn and lived near Fairview School, which is probably the nicest K-6 in Lewiston/Auburn. If you want to live in Lewiston, look near Raymond A. Geiger elementary school which is past Bates College. Gray is right in the middle of Portland and Lewiston/Auburn and has a better public school system, but is definitely a much quieter area.

Auburn has all of your typical big box stores as well as a mall. Lewiston has a redeveloping downtown with some nice restaurants, but not so much for "shopping". There's a nice cafe near the Auburn library where you can get coffee and some nice places on lower Lisbon St. in Lewiston. Naturally there is no shortage of Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts if that is what you're into. There are quite a few hotel options in the area and I haven't heard anything bad about the Ramada in Lewiston which is just off of Interstate 95.
