Hi. I am brand new to the area. I will be needing an auto inspection and I am afraid to go somewhere that will quote me repairs that are unnecessary just because they have me at their mercy.

I could do the inspection at a dealer (Pape) but if they find anything wrong they might charge more than an independent.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Back in Boston I found a mechanic that was fair and didn't talk down to me because I'm a woman. I really want to find someone I can trust out here.

Thank you so much for your help.

Check out the reviews on the NPR/Car Talk website....that is how I found a pretty reputable place when I lived in Portland. Woodford Street Garage, if you are interested.

Its not Scarborough, but not a far drive. Bothels Mechanical Repair in Cape Elizabeth on rt 77 is fair and honest.
I've bought my car in and said..I think x could be wrong and when I pick it up he has simply replaced an inexpensive y.
He could have taken advantage of me many times over, Once I found him I never went anywhere else. Inspection is $18.

When I first moved here I went to VIP in S Portland, cause they did inspections on weekends. They told me I need all kinds of work which wasn't necessary...which I knew wasn't necessary..like my rotors were all gouged up, visibly not true.

BTW bothels is on the car guys list....I almost didn't go to him cause he was in cape and its a M-F 7:30 to 5pm
business. Oh and I am a woman also, and he explains things to me like I just a person who interested intaking care of my car!!

We found an independent auto mechanic in Gorham Maine......just off the main street down town near the Thai restaurant and Sebego Brew Pub. I will see if I can find the name. He did excellent work and was very reliable and honest. Gorham is quite close to Scarborough.

I found them..... http://www.cartersautoservicemaine.com/ The owner is a family man....and I thnk you would find him fair and honest.....and respectful of women. We had very good experience over the years we used them.

This one got even better marks on the npr car talk site. http://www.cartalk.com/me/gorham/127...rham-auto-care I don't know....we didn't take our car there.

I've been going to Bothels for 4-ish years. Couldn't agree more. Honest people who simply know cars. And that's saying something for that type of business.

Eh, I wasn't impressed with Bothel's. Whoever I dealt with was pretty rude. You don't tell someone you think their car is junk when they're handing you money for work you just did. Never went back. Cramped lot, dirty garage, no waiting area, forget it.
