Hello Mainers and city-data users!! It is official myself and family is coming to Maine to live now. I have asked other questions about coming to Maine in different threads and want to say all the information users provided was very helpful. Coming to live in the Greater Portland area will be a big transition.

We are already talking with our realtor about the area's we like. Portland though has numerous areas which is why I would like to get some feedback from others on Portland neighborhoods that you would suggest as excellent for a young family that will be expanding and living in for a very long time. I am aware that Cape Elizabeth is out of the price range so no need to comment living there. Deering sounds good because it's near lots of schools when our young one begins to attend. Any perspectives on neighborhoods in south Portland, outskirts of northern Portland, or other places?

Gorham seems to be the prime spot we like but in this housing market not too many houses and choices there at the moment.

Also are there good community organizations we can get involved in? If so please suggest or provide some references? We are coming to Maine to be part of community and help others so joining a community organization is important to us.

Would you have any suggestions on dance studios for ballroom dancing?

If you have any advice to us, it would greatly be appreciated. Look forward to more Sea Dog beer and eat out at DiMillo's Barge.

Hi FamilyMan,

Sorry you haven't received any responses to your question. Wish I could help, but I live almost 2 hours north of Portland, so I don't really know the area. Just wanted to wish you good luck with your move and welcome to Maine!

Please give more information --

How many children and how old are they? What types of orgs. are you interested in? Both parents working?

I work in Portland and am involved in a lot of orgs, charities and cultural groups. I live in York Cty.

Be specific. I'd be happy to help if I can.

I'm not aware of any ballroom dancing, but if there's nothing at the moment, you can always start one!
