Hello everyone

I just received a job offer to work in Portland Maine. My wife and 6 month baby will be joining me. We currently live in Downtown Salt Lake utah. We love living in here but the horrible air quality and numerous little things are getting old (like no good craft beer and crazy bar laws). Just the overall lifestyle we enjoyed in other places that we can't enjoy here. I visited portland a few years ago and fell in love with it, now with this job offer my dreams are coming true. So we enjoy living in the downtown area, we would love to live within walking distance to downtown. I'm a asking for help from the locals, is there a area we should avoid living in? As far as budget $1600 would be max but a good deal is always welcomed. I would need 2 parking spots if possible. I just really need to know what area to look in and what to avoid. If you think that budget is not sufficient please recommend another area.
Thanks for any help..

What do you consider walking distance? Outside your door? 5, 10, 15 min walk?

There aren't really any bad parts of Portland, though the neighborhoods surrounding Preble St and Franklin St aren't great.

I would consider walking distance to be 15 min.

I will try to avoid those two areas. Thank you.

A $1600/mo budget with a 15 min walking radius gives you a lot of options. Essentially, everything on the peninsula will fit your criteria. I live near the western most part of the peninsula and I can be downtown in 15 minutes by walking and my rent is about half of your budget for an attic 2-bedroom with 2 parking spaces. The city is your oyster!

My wife found a apartment online at 30 Preble st. Just looking with Google maps, it appears to be off Preble and Congress. Is this a area you would avoid?

When you say "western peninsula" what streets or area is that?

Thanks for any help.

Preble and Congress is very near the Preble St Resource Center, i.e. homeless shelter. Naturally there are a lot of seedy types that congregate in that area.

I live near Maine Medical Center in what is considered the "Valley Street" neighborhood. It's definitely one of the more affordable areas of the city, in fact, probably the most affordable area in your 15 minute walking radius of downtown that isn't a housing project or subsidized. I definitely feel safer here late at night than I would near 30 Preble St.
