Hello,
I posted this originally under something like "Moving home from Tampa?" and didn't get any replies, so I'm trying this one.
I grew up in Portland and lived many years in Scarborough and then Manchester, NH., area before retiring to Florida. Been in Tampa, Fl., area for more than 3 years and really homesick for the seasons and New England. Trying to decide about moving back to Maine, maybe Old Orchard/Saco area, or returning to New Hampshire. NH property taxes are so high, but Maine taxes pensions and SS, I think. I do like living in a retirement community in FL, but I don't think Maine has any that are reasonably priced. Do anyone know of any?
Thanks, Lulu

According to a report from August 2013 from Kiplinger, Maine exempts Social Security from state income tax. It also exempts the first $6,000 of pension income. I did not read all the details, so you might want to click on the link to read further.

I'm considering retiring to Maine from California and when I put the tax questions to my tax guy, he calculated that in my case, the difference would literally be only a few dollars in Maine (zero in California since as he put it: "California is nice to its poor people"). My pension is not huge and my SSI is a bit shy of the upper limit, so unless you have a lot of retirement income, don't let Maine's income taxes scare you until you check with your tax expert.

As for retirement villages in Maine, most of what I've found are generally assisted living type places that are very expensive: buy-ins, plus monthly rents, etc, etc. The few places that are truly simply independent senior living must still offer 20% of their inventory to non seniors by state law (crazy, but true).

Been a few months since I checked, but these were among the more affordable:

Camden Senior Mobil Home Park: Mountain Side in Camden, ME

Gorham: Welcome to Pheasant Knoll Condos (doesn't state 55+ but is)

Rockland: Bartlett Woods Retirement Community Midcoast Maine - Bartlett Woods
