Are there more rural areas outside of Portland that would still be within commuting distance from it? Some town names to look in would be useful if you guys could provide any. I haven't been there yet, but I'm assuming that there might be a chance like many cities in the far NE, that cities were surrounded by more rural land.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Buxton is certainly a more rural town, and it's a reasonable commute to Portland.

rural is subjective, Portland is a very livable City in its own right with a much larger feel than its 65k population. I wouldn't worry about it unless your coming from Alaska I think Maine is pretty rural overall..

I would be thinking cost, schools ect.. Some of the more rural towns are seeing growth in upper middle class construction and where places like Portland and a few of the more condensed cities around it have limited growth potential places like Scarborough are exploding... keep in mind this is Maine so exploding is still a loose term when compared to places outside of Maine ..
