I don't want to break any rules, but would be interested in getting names and contact info PMd to me of realtors who handle/specialize in rentals. We have a tentative arrival date in late June to the Portland area. Currently scouring CL and an fb page for rentals with no luck. We had to scrap our planned house hunting trip this month and could really use assistance in finding a place to live. We are a family of four with two dogs. TIA.

I'd like to add that we will eventually buy a home, so we're keen on establishing a relationship with a realtor early on.

I hope I won't discourage you, but when we were moving, we had NO success at all with realtors. They all seemed to want rich Philadelphia and Boston lawyers wanting to rent vacation homes at high prices. When they found out we weren't rich and were wanting an actual residence, they pretty much started ignoring us. The one appointment we had to look at a house, the lady never showed up. And then she stopped answering her phone.

We had a lot more success with Craigslist and the classifieds from the newspaper. Also word of mouth. We had a few people tell us that they didn't have anything big enough or vacant at the time, but they'd give us the number of a friend who also had rentals.

There are very few companies that deal with rental housing as you might find in bigger markets such as Boston or New York, there just isn't enough demand to support the business model. Most REALTORS like myself don't work with rental properties, maybe 1% of us do and there is no reciprocal showing of other listings. Mark S., I'm quite certain that the bad experience you had was not with a REALTOR, but with a rental agent. With home sales, I am able to show any property in the state of Maine, but with rentals, the agents only show and market their own rental listings. When I get the request, I do the same thing as you have done, refer to craigslist and the local newspaper's online site. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Perhaps. It's been almost 9 years ago. I'm certain the lady was working out of a realtor firm. She may have been a rental agent. But it was definitely a realty agency.

Thank you for the replies. We haven't had much luck with CL and was hoping to work with an agent to help us find a "temp" home then eventually permanent home.

Don't get discouraged. It took us about a month and a half to find a suitable place. New homes come open every day. Just keep looking.

Sorry, it's almost impossible to find somebody who does both and does both well.

We had a devil of a time looking for a rental house. Honestly the only thing that worked was coming to Maine for a long weekend and driving around the neighborhoods that I preferred and looking for "for rent" signs staked in the lawn. It seems so strange to do it that way in this day and age, but life is just like that here. Good luck!
