Hi - we are relocating to Scarborough ME in June. I have 2 sons 8 and 6 and was wondering what soccer leagues there are to consider? Also given that we are moving before school starts also was wondering if there are summer programs where they can meet children their age? THANKS

Hi. I have kids the same age. Both play fall soccer (starts in August) through Community Services. I usually coach my son's team. As for summer programs, we do Camp Ketcha most years. Look it up - they are really great.

Where in Scarborough are you moving to?

Scarborough is a bit south of me, but I know that nearly all towns have lots of summer programs throughout the area, run by both the towns, churches, and other organizations. There are usually various soccer clinics in the summer, though the leagues don't usually start up until August/September in most towns.

Also: Any second now some old curmudgeon is going to post that in his day kids didn't need soccer. Gosh durnit they had the outdoors and imagination and vacant lots. If that ain't good enough for you, just go back to where you came from and let kids be kids.

When that happens, just ignore them. The grouches don't represent most Maineahs.

We're also moving to Scarborough at the end of June, and I found this link very helpful:

Community Services - Town of Scarborough, Maine

There seems to be a lot to do once we get settled in.

Yes, there is plenty to do. Beaches are close by (get yourself a parking pass from town hall). There are many biking/hiking trails (Eastern Trail and Greenbelt) and parks. Community Services is great for youth sports programs. When we moved in it was summer and the first few months felt like vacation. Enjoy and welcome to Scarborough.
