Well let me start off by briefly introducing myself.

I am from a small town outside of burlington vermont, and will be moving to portland maine in January. I know absolutly nothing about the area.

I have heard various things in regards to crime and safety, and was wondering if you portland verterans can clear that up for me. I will be renting an apartment around maine medical center (upper grant street in particular), and wonder what sort of things I should be aware of.

I am also a younger guy whom is single.. what is the night life and women like around portland?

Also anything else you wish to add about the portland area I would appreciate very much

Be careful.

They are big, tall and over-weight.
They have crooked long fang looking teeth, think Ferengi!
They have hair on their backs, dark shadows of rough stubble on their chins, and those long curly hairs on their chests.
They stink too!
They chew tobacco and spit, and sometimes it drips down their chins.

Or not.

How would I know anything about Portland ladies?

I have never left the freeway when passing near Portland. I live up North a bit.

But hey, I do wish you luck in your ventures.

Except he was serious...

You're practically going to be a neighbor. Something interesting always seems to happen in this neighborhood. There's a fair amount of drug dealing going on, but unless you make their business your business they will not bother you (physically). You will be right off of Congress, which is the main drag as far as nightlife is concerned. Some cool bars, cool people. Downtown Lounge is a cool place. Geno's is okay. Norm's is cool. Hot Suppa has the best (non-buffet style) brunch. Tell me more of what you want to know, and I can be more specific in my answers.

I know the police are on Grant street a lot. I am not sure of the number but it might be 60 Grant Street. Coming from Burlington the crime will seem high but compared to other cities of it's size in other states it's fairly safe. Don't be fooled, Portland is getting worse but so is just about every other city too.

I don't know if this will be of any interest to you but in May we took the Duck Tour around Portland. It was great to learn te history of Portland and well worht it. I don't know when they will start the tours up again..I think it is May..but it was really neat. They pick you up by the floating restaurant.

Portland's Visitor Center (or Tourist Board?) --sorry I don't remember just which organization it was) will send you a very nice CD all about Portland--It's really for tourists, but it does make it look like a great place to live. I bet you could find more specific information on a google search.
