Submariner is kidding, right, like tongue in cheek, a big jokester? What does he mean by 10,000 miles of sled trails?

Would you like a 'source document'?

ITS Trail Map

Quote:
... When viewing your printed ITS map: ITS trails are marked red, connector trails marked green. Green boxed markings (ie: AK37, PT 15) represent junctions denoted by the first and last letter of the county in which the junction is located, and the number assigned to the junction. ...
Quote:
... Additional maps of regional and local snowmobile trail systems are produced by snowmobile clubs, Chambers of Commerce and tourism groups throughout the state. These maps depict the additional 10,000 miles of trail not covered by the ITS map. Due to scale, these maps are generally more detailed than the statewide ITS map. Refer to the list of regional and local snowmobile maps linked above for information on how to obtain copies.
The ITS has around 6,000 miles of sled trails [I think], PLUS regional and local trail systems add another 10,000 miles of sled trails to Maine sledders.

Was there anything else you wished to ask Submariner?

Yes, what is a sled trail and what does one do with it? I don't doubt that they exist, but what is the point? Do you have sled dogs? if you are sledding, you just need one good hill!

Snowmobile trails are well packed down and maintained. They are also used by cross country skiers and snowshoers, which is why Submariner brought it up.

We've done winter trips to the the Huts & Trails network the last couple of years and its really awesome. They are super green, off the grid cabins and lodges that are connected by trails - staffed with great cooks and woodburning stoves, so you can hike and hang out all day then come back to a cozy cabin. They are brand new and mostly funded by LLBean so they are stocked with kayaks and other gear. Great in the fall too, but especially with a group of friends in the winter - pretty affordable too, for a weekend away (with great food!!)
