My husband will be working in Kittery and ideally we would keep his commute under 45 minutes. We have two young boys and are looking for an area that is family friendly, SAFE, etc. Ideally we would be closer to Portland for amenities, but price is a factor. Any suggestions? Or towns/areas to stay away from?

Thank you! - Annie

One thing to keep in mind is living in or near Kittery, you’ll have Portsmouth amenities, so may not feel like you need to live further north closer to Portland. If you live north of Kittery, you’ll be likely commuting via the turnpike. At least the commute direction would be the opposite of the larger numbers heading into Portland metro for work.

For affordability, you may want to look inland a little as the coast is always more expensive (and not just a little more). You could also reasonably consider NH.

Can't speak too much to maine but look at the NH seacoast. Durham, Newmarket, Newfields, Exeter, Dover, the Hamptons, etc.

You did not give a price range so it is hard to make accurate recommendations.

Sounds like the Saco area might fit, but as others have said, that's going to depend upon what amenities you are looking for and what type of house might work for you.

So why can't you live in Kittery? or Kittery Point? Did I miss something?

Dover is a nice small city and close to Kittery on the NH side of the river. It's not tied closely to the seasonal boom/bust of tourists as many towns in coastal Maine are. It has a hospital, supermarkets, interesting downtown with enough going on year round that I think it would offer a good quality of life. Not too expensive either. Eliot, on the ME side, is fairly inexpensive, but there is really nothing in Eliot for a downtown except a general store and a little strip mall.

Thank you!
We just haven't found anything that we can afford. Our budget is 300K as we are moving from a lower cost of living area.

I posted on your thread in the NH forum. Dover, NH, is probably your best bet.
