I was wondering if employers would consider conducting a phone interview with individuals who are relocating? What is your experience with this? I am referencing entry level positions--Goodwill, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Etc.

Well, I think it might be tough and certainly not every place will be willing. Part of the trouble is that if you are looking at entry level positions those type of positions at those employers are probably looking for people who can start in fairly short order (in part because there need will likely be more immediate because of being acutely short staffed). And if you are not relocating straight away they might be less likely to accommodate.

Now the companies you mentioned have many locations so if you are not ready to move straight away and there is one of those stores in your area you may consider looking for work there and then down the road you can inquire about a transfer type deal due to relocation. Then the store on the other end of the move may be willing to consider meeting via phone with you because it'll be kind of internal application.

One issue is that many places such as those companies make you apply online before even really offering a great deal of discussion. And, of course, those application are often screened for certain criteria/keywords before even reaching the hiring manager.

But it's worth giving a call to the store you are looking at and asking to speak to the hiring manager to make a general inquiry voicing your interest and asking for the best way to approach applying.

For jobs like that, I’d probably suggest moving FIRST. There will almost certainly be some options for you in that line of work somewhere in the area. And it’s not like they are going to help you with relocation or give you a signing bonus that will permit the move.
