i call them as i see them. i've lived in several different cities across the country, as i travel for work, so my response to maine is not based on any preconcieved notions and i assure you of the places i've lived, i was quite happy with several. part of my job is to "adapt", as you put it. by the way, all you did was reiterate my original points, only softened them. and if you are so eager to defend maine's honor, why are you leaving?? yes, people do make sacrifices to live here...but are they worth it? they aren't for you or i, clearly. people who grew up in maine, love maine. people who move here need to be aware of what they are going to deal with. if someone can read my condescending/narrow-minded response and still thinkmoving here is what they want to do, then they will be prepared for everything you and i were not. and my comment about portland restaurants being pretentious was in reference to the overpriced tasteless garbage they serve to the tourists and call it "local cuisine". and further more, michigan winters are NOT as bad as maine winters. as i lived there for several decades, i think i'm going to be the authority on that. minnesota, however, is another story. but you are absolutely correct in saying maine is not for everyone. people who can live here and love it are of a select breed.

Some of what you say is true, but some of it is also a little harsh. You seem like a big city ubanite who has not / cannot adapt to life in a less populated area. At the same time, most of the things you are saying about Maine could be said about most rural states in the country.

The biggest reasons I want to leave are political & financial.

And yes, I am one of the ones who has left and come back. Having been to almost every state in the US, as well as Asia and the Caribbean, and also in Europe for a couple years I do realize the rest of the world isn't all that scary.

That post was much less condescending. I came to Maine for college and stayed for financial reasons. I want out because 1) my career as an urban planner will require me to live in a larger area and 2) I enjoy living in a more populated area. It's a personal taste and is no slight against Maine. I defend Maine's "honor" because your first post belittled and generalized the people of Maine as socially awkward, provincial, and VERY sheltered. While there are some people who fit that mold (there are every, rural AND urban areas), I wouldn't say that they make up the majority of people in this state. I don't think it's fair to come into a state's forum and make a sweeping generalization. My experience has been good here and though I don't want to stay NOT because I don't like Maine or the people, but because I'd PREFER elsewhere (for both personal and professional reasons).

I'll agree with some of what you said in this most recent post, but your first one was VERY abrasive. It does take a certain type of person to live in Maine, but MOST (there are some exceptions) people who are looking to move here look to live here for certain reasons (quiet, comfort and solitude) and they know what they want.

My post does NOT reiterate your points as I don't feel that your generalizations are accurate. I've met some people who may fit the description of the socially awkward folks or the sheltered people you mention, but again... they are far from being the majority. Also, the people I've met here are MORE than welcoming to people who WANT to be here. If you have a condescending, "Maine Sucks" attitude, why would anyone be warm to you?

If you're truly trying to help prospective new residents, then you'd probably write something a bit less condescending. It seems to me like you're bitter about being here and looking for a way to vent.

To Synchronicity1003:

From my experience it takes lots of hard work, patience, planning, saving, sacrifice to successfully relocate....some friendly assistance might be welcome.....but that should be helpful but non-essential. I notice that you have only been researching Maine on C-D for less than 9 days..that hardly shows a lot of planning or research. To reach out to strangers to make your plans possible....keeps them in the realm of impossible.

IMHO if you require someone else to make your move happen....you arent ready to move. (I lived in RI for many years, and altho I am happy to be in Maine.....I wouldn't be so quick to run down RI.....who knows in a year you might be bad mouthing Maine.

So I wish you good luck in your plans but suggest that you need to make it happen for yourself.

I have been patient and trying to get resources for nine years, not 9 days. I thought networking and trying to reach out to others would be helpful. I don't expect others to move for me, but i am being humble enough to reach out to others for helful info. I am without relatives or friends, and being isolated is no help either.
Thanks again for wishing me more than luck. I have been in rhode island for 12 years, and haven't had a stable job yet. So, i would like to give maine a chance to refresh my reality. It is better than no where zone r.i.
