I like Midcoast Maine around Penobscot Bay. Camden is a jewel of a town, but nearby Rockland is much cheaper. Belfast is really nice to the north. You can purchase just outside one of these towns for a lot less. The mountains come down to the sea at Camden, making for a beautiful coastline. Lots of organic farmers around, health food stores, yoga studios, and surprisingly lots of cultural things going on for families. Christmas celebrations, farmers markets, big fairs, museums, playgrounds, libraries. The kids section in the Camden library is really neat.
