Hey All,
I know there are a lot of similarities between Yarmouth and Cumberland, but is one more known for more young families over the other? Are most of the people in these suburbs transplants from other states? Thanks!

I grew up in Yarmouth and though it is a nice town, as is Cumberland, you're not going to get the community feeling like it used to be in those areas until you get above the Augusta area now. Southern Maine is suburbia through and through. If you have lived here all your life you know enough of the townspeople to have a good circle of friends. If you're new you may never get to know any true natives as a great many of the folks in these towns are from away. It's not a bad thing but it's not like it is in parts of the state where the neighbors will watch your house for you or you know everyone in town in a few months. Most of the people in these towns grew up there and look out for each other. They have a family oriented way about them. Yarmouth has more of the country club and bridge set.

Why are the property taxes so high in Cumberland?

Yarmouth is partially subsidised by the large power generating station on Cousin's Island. The mill rate in Yarmouth is lower than many of the surrounding towns. Cumberland has no power plant, large industrial base, or anything else to off set the property taxe base necessary to run the town hence it falls on the individual property owners to foot the bill.

Even tho I can be in downtown Portland in 20 min, Cumberland has remained a very sleepy town. A gas station and a general store is pretty much the only commercial businesses in the village. A bank wanted to come in which would have been great but the abutting neighbors prevented it by putting up a stink.

We live in the village on a dead end street, awesome quiet and safe place to bring up 3 kids.

Over the years the town has bought a couple of the farms that buffers Cumberland from the sprawl in Falmouth.

Yarmouth is right on the coast and US 1 so it's much busier but it's a very nice place. Beautiful older but well kept homes.

An interesting fact to consider, as of this morning Cumberland has twice the amount of Single Family Homes under $600,000 on the Multiple Listing Service as Yarmouth. Yarmouth's population is a bit higher than Cumberland, so you can see there is somewhat of a shortage in Yarmouth.

To answer the OP I think both communities are very family orientated. To be honest, I also think most every small town is pretty family oriented. Awesome school systems in both.
