I am relocating to Southern Maine/New Hampshire soon. Was hoping to be closer to Portsmouth but have not had any luck finding a reasonably priced place.

It seems there are mixed opinions on Biddeford and Saco. Was curious what people here thought. There are some cool options in both (downtown) and just wanted some honest opinions.

Thanks!

I think that Biddeford is up and coming. There are a lot of people that don't agree with that, and will tell you that it is nothing more than trashy people living in a trashy town. Saco is the nicer of the two, but it is more expensive with more regulations.

Thanks. Mostly concerned about safety. Coming from out of state and not super familiar with the area

Hello - I have lived in Saco off and on for 30 years. it is a very safe town and a very safe state to live in, crime-wise. Biddeford's downtown has undergone a total metamorphosis the past 5+ years and it's been so nice to see. A lot of independent businesses have moved in - coffee shops and the like, and it's been a success. The town is poorer than Saco and has always been as it is where the large brick mills were located in the 1800s - most of which have been turned into newer apartments and condos.

Saco is mostly middle class, but there are decent places to live in both towns.

Both cities have small, walkable downtowns filled with independent shops, mostly.

Unfortunately rents have skyrocketed everywhere - all over the country - and continue to do so. I would suggest, if you haven't already done so, checking craigslist for housing.

Best of luck to you.
