Does anybody know of shops around Portland that unlock cell phones? I found one in Augusta, but don't want to drive that far.

Depending on what carrier the phone is locked to, you may be able to call the carrier and get the unlock code and do it yourself. T-Mobile will give anyone the unlock code if the phone had been used for either 3 or 6 months (I'm not sure which). Then you can unlock the phone yourself. ATT may offer the same kind of deal. Call the carrier on the phone and talk to them.

Yes, I've successfully had T Mobile unlock their phone in the past, but this is an AT&T GoPhone. From what I understand thay won't do it.

Not all AT&T phones are a GSM system. If you have a T-Mobile, Cingular, or recent new M-mode type service with AT&T, then you have GSM service. Otherwise you use a CDMA system. If your phone doesn't have a SIM card, it's CDMA. I don't know for sure, but I'd bet gophone is not GSM. It's the GSM phones with a SIM card that you can unlock.

Sorry kellysmith, I think you're confused on cell technologines. According to this page, AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM, Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. A few years back, AT&T (Cingular) used TDMA technology - I had one of those phones when they discontinued the service.

The gophone is definitely GSM and has a SIM, as I can take it out of the AT&T phone and it works fine in my unlocked T-Mobile phone.
