My fiance and I are thinking of re-locating to the Portland area in ME. We are currently living in NJ and we do not want to raise a family in such a crowded state. We are also looking to buy a home and the taxes here are out of reach here!
I was looking for advice on the area as far as everyday life and we would both need jobs so I was curious how the job market is these days in that area. I am currently working as a county welfare worker and my fiance is a park ranger but is open to changing careers to something in the environmental science field.
I have never lived anywhere else but Jersey so I'm terrified to leave the sercurity of my surrondings and my job but I really think this is the right move for us. I really need to know if the bugs and the winters are REALLY THAT BAD as these are my two major concerns.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!!

You don't say what part of NJ you are from but I've lived all over the state Winters are a bit worse than North Jersey. Bugs, near the ocean in Portland are not as bad as mosquitoes & green heads in South Jersey in my experience.

We live in Windham, about 20 minutes west of Portland. It's a community of about 17,000 people and I am glad we moved here to raise our 3 kids. As far as the job market, I think it's probably about the same as everywhere else, but Maine's wages are typically not as high as other areas of the countries. The cost of living ie food is higher than other areas as well.

As far as bugs? Yup, we have them. :-) Probably not any worse than any other area. Cold winters are a matter of opinion. I'm sure the winters are more harsh than what you have in NJ. Unbearable? No.

Good luck in your relocation.

The winters here, while colder, should not that far of a stretch from a New Jersey winter as far as temp is concerned. The only real difference is that Portland receives more snow...a lot more snow, and the winters here are a little bit longer.

Jobs....jobs around here are kind of slim pickings. Not because of the economy, but just because there are not that many jobs to begin with that are not geared towards the service industry or tourism. However, as a social worker you probably should not have a problem finding work since it is no secret that tons of people here are on welfare.

For a park ranger...my guess is that this position would be hard to find around here. Maybe further north.

Bugs...the bug scene around here is not too bad.
