Hi, I'm Katie

I am a college student and I've been accepted to Maine at Machias and southern Maine university. Could someone tell of which papers to read to look for a job in southern Maine. Like what store, restaurants are hiring. And any useful information and advice you have for me. I would really appreciate it.

Also about public transportation. I'm from New York and I know it'll be super different. Also are there a lot of bike trails for bike raiders. Thanks really need all the info I can get.

By the way is it true that people in Maine are friendly? Could I go up to someone and ask for directions and they won't run away.

The Portland Press Herald is the local Portland Paper.

Do a post in the Portland section of the Maine forum and you will get better, more well informed answers.
USM is a good school. You'll like it there.

My wife and a bunch of my friends went to USM and it seems like a good school.
To look for a job try Craigslist, Portland Press Herald on line, and jobsinsouthernmaine.com
There is public bussing in Portland but nothing like NY. USM is also split into two campuses one in Portland and the other in Gorham. You will most likely have classes in both places.
There are plenty of bike trails in and around Portland.
Yes Mainers are friendly especially when compared to NY'ers and a lot of Mainers will look forward to you asking them directions. Good Luck!

Craigslist is a good place to check for jobs. Also, the city of Portland website lists some jobs with the city. I went to USM and worked with the city of Portland. If you're employed by the city and work 18.75 hours/week you get a 50% tuition refund which is one hell of a deal. See what's available... a lot of people work with the Rec department helping at after school programs, but Aquatics is great if you have/ are willing to get lifeguarding or WSI certifications.

Public transit in Portland is 8 bus lines. fine for right around town, but don't expect to go far on the bus. Portland is pretty bike friendly. There are bike lanes and trails in a good number of spots, particularly near the Portland campus of the university.

Do you have a car - or will you be using the bus to get back and forth from South Portland to Gorham?

I think they make studded bicycle tires now which extends the bicycle season all the way out to four months.

;-)

Forgot to mention USM has their own bus from the gorham campus to the Portland one. The schedule is plenty convenient.
