$500.00 a month for heating? Good gracious.

Yes, that is a good deal than what we pay.

This is an older home with old windows that have lots of drafts. We have put up the plastic sheeting on many windows -- it's a laborious process but we're getting there. Just got the oil tank filled (auto refill) and it was just about 30 days from our last delivery. So it does seem abut $480 a month for oil plus some for the gas stove in the family room.

Of course house size and insulation makes all the difference.
So far, i'm spending somewhere between $2 and $2.50 less per day than I did two seasons ago (which is probably a better temperature comparison than last season). That's around 1/3 improvement despite having family visiting for 2-3 weeks over the holidays - no doubt using plenty of additional heat and hot water. This is making me happy. Here's to hoping it keeps up.

The increased cost in heating oil is screwing up everything, though!

Ours averages $225.00 a month year round. Higher in the winter and much lower in the summer.

For me it is $1300 so far. I have filled my tank twice since the beginning of October. I do have an older home that we've done our best to winterize but the oil prices are high. I have a 2300 sq ft house.

We will be coming up to the Bangor area in June for househunting leave(military). We are lucky enough to receive a housing stipend, but I have been trying to figure out a heating average. I was estimating about 200 per month annually, however, that is starting to seem low with the recent and future rise in fuel prices. I haven't lived in the North for a great deal of time now! What are so winterization tips I should consider?

Welcome to Maine

Will you be at the ANGB in Bangor?

If you plan on renting, then you will likely not be using wood or coal to heat with. Mostly likely oil or gas.

Assuming that petroleum prices do continue to rise; then 'yes' you will likely be paying more.

Many rentals in the area have heat and hot-water included in the rent.

I would not worry about it, until after you get here.

Welcome!
