I'm planning my first trip to Portland and I like to stay in historic hotels, preferably in the downtown area. Does anyone have recommendations? There are 7 that I've been looking at:

Hotel Deluxe
Benson Hotel
Monaco
Heathman
Governor
Hotel Lucia
Embassy Suites downtown

They all look really nice. The Hotel Deluxe is one I'm leaning toward because a friend really liked it and said they had a great bar but I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks!

Of the 7, I have stayed at the Governor, the Benson, and the Heathman, and I would rank them in that order.

The Benson is going to look the part the most, including the rooms. The Benson also has the London Grill restaurant which is one of the best in Portland. I haven't had dinner there in a long time, but the brunch is excellent.

The Heathman had nice rooms but I didn't eat there. Since it was on Broadway, there are a lot of other restaurants around (Saucebox). I took a look at the menu, couldn't read half of it, and left. Brasserie Montmartre was within walking distance and has live music. The bar inside Heathman is good to hang out, but boring compared to its surroundings.

The Governor was the best experience. If you can afford it, get a room with a terrace that faces 10th. The balcony is high enough for a great view and low enough so you can yell at passer-bys if you're drunk enough. It's not so noisy and is close to a lot of other things to do. Also Jake's Grill is great for dinner and stiff drinks (that's how you get drunk enough). Jake's is also less formal than the others so you don't have to dress like James Bond.

You're really not going to go wrong with any of those three.

I don't know firsthand about staying at Hotel Deluxe, but a friend's family stayed in town for a week and really enjoyed their stay there. Also had brunch in their dining room and was very wonderful food and service, and ambience.
