I actually find it surprisingly impressive. I mean it's nowhere near San Francisco or Seattle big, but it's big enough. Especially now that they're building new apartment high rises along the river and such.

I'd have to agree with you. As far as skylines go I think Portland is very unique and special in the sense that you will always see skylines like NY, Las Vegas, San Fran, but I think Portland is kind of a lost gem as far as popularity goes which is okay by me. I've seen some really amazing HD pics of the city that, quite frankly, are pound for pound more impressive than other cities such as the ones mentioned above.

I wouldn't say it's "impressive". When I first saw it, I was a bit underwhelmed. But if you take the time to really study it, I think you'll find that it does have character, variety and good density. The natural setting with Mt. Hood and/or the West Hills in the background helps a lot, too.

With the exception of the SOWA towers, the skyline is looking a bit dated, however. I sure wish Tom Moyer's stalled tower west of Nordstroms would get kick-started.

Portland has so many great qualities but the skyline, per se, is not really one of them.

It depends on how you see it, IMHO. If you approach downtown Portland from I-84, when you get to the point where it intersects with I-5, the view of the downtown Portland skyline AND the Willamette River AND the bridges is gorgeous. Especially so at night or at dusk. After 35 years, it never fails to thrill me. And it's so unexpected for a first timer. You take that left at I-5 and suddenly, there it is in all it's beauty. Add in the green hills all around it, well like I said, it's gorgeous.

You're right, Sayulita. That is an awesome view of Portland. You can see from downtown to the foothill highrises all the way to old Montgomery Wards & beyond. I worked with a guy at Drake's 7 Dees who said when he first drove into Portland from that direction it scared him because the city looked so huge.

405 south where it wraps around to I-5 north while you drive past OMSI is a pretty good view from the high up overpass. Also the southward views from the Portland City Grill restaurant later in the evening but before dark are very impressive.

It could be much denser and taller if it needed to be but I don't think that will be happening any time soon given the economy and Portland's relative lack of it even in good times.
