Does anyone know what areas are considered "bad"/crime ridden?.

It really depends on where you're interested in (i.e. SE, NE, SW, N, etc) but a basic generalization is close in (closer to downtown rather than further) is usually a decent/good area. It varies and that's a generalization but futher out tends to be cheaper and cheaper tends to be where more drugs and crime occur. Some areas such as Belmont/Hawthorne have a lot of petty crimes like car break ins and stuff like that though so again, it really varies and depends on what you're worried about.

Thanks Oldtintype!

Just looking for an area that is safer than most I guess, an area that is good for raising kids. I'm originally from NYC and currently live in Vegas, basically lived in NY for over 25 years and never felt unsafe...been in Vegas for almost 6 years and feel unsafe everyday (home invasions are pretty big here lately). I know crime happens everywhere and the measures to take to make sure you don't end up a statistic but would like to raise my child in a nicer, family friendly, somewhat low crime area. Thank you again for responding to my post!

Any comments about the schools in that area?

Suggest staying away from NE PDX, including Gresham.

Great question and I'd really like to hear more responses from the natives... please don't be afraid of sounding inpolitically correct.

I think it's all relative too. I just got home from work tonight after working my shift on the west side of Long Beach, CA. There were three seperate gang shootings and a stabbing (three people killed) just between 9:30 pm and midnight. To me that's a place to stay away from... I hope Portland doesn't have any places like that! I too want to move to a safe place.

((LOL))) no problem...we understand!

I'd posted a similar question when we were looking at relocating to Charlotte last year and almost caused a riot on that forum. It wasn't my intention to make people angry just trying to make sure that I don't make the same mistake I made when purchasing our home here in Vegas...we assumed that the neighborhood was great since it was considered to be a "good area"...boy were we in for a surprise!. Thanks for the support and backup...hopefully our questions will be answered!
