Hi guys/gals!

First off thanks to whoever reads and responds b/c I am sure you get this a lot

We want to move to Oregon soonish (1-2yrs) and wanted to get advice/info. Wanted to see if Portland area is best for us - and what the surrounding areas outside Portland would be good. We're in our late 20s and have a 7 year old son. Good schools is a must for us. My husband and I both tend to be more liberal minded and like areas that are environmentally friendly as well. We currently live in Colorado so we do love the outdoors and outdoor activities - we just miss the ocean (moved from FL and have no desire to go back to the east coast) We also love Punk rock So want to be able to see shows which seem to hit up Portland when in OR. We, of course want like everyone, safe area ect - I also understand there is no state tax but property taxes are high. Some have recommended renting first, but if we were to buy the house price range would probably be 250-300k. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, but we DO have state taxes. No sales tax though......yet. I suggest that you look through this forum thoroughly and then come back if you have specific questions. There is a ton of info already posted.

I am sure you know this already, but just to repeat....

Portland is a good distance from a cold and mostly not swimmer friendly Pacific ocean; maybe 90 minute drive depending on where your home is, western 'burbs are closer. Swim only with 'wet' suit. Beaches are mostly rocky and very beautiful for walking. Lots of fog.

Portland has only limited urban sprawl.

Could you be thinking maybe of Washington? Portland property taxes and state taxes are high. What is your profession and what type of area are you seeking in which to live? Are you planning on sending your child to a public or private school? Will you be planning on using public transportatonh or will you be commuting by car? Are you interested in a walkable neigborhood? Are suburbs a consideration? Do you need to be close to a place of worship? These are the issues about which you should be concerned.

Portland is a close to two hours from the ocean and while the coast is beautiful and well worth visiting any time of the year it is not like Florida beaches.
