I've been in Portland for a month now and am looking at getting settled and into my own place. I'd rather not get a studio which is in my price range and see quite a few 2-3 bedroom homes in the part of town I would like to live, only problem is the few people I've met from CL have flaked out for various reasons. All of my friends here already have established living situations, so I'm branching out to strangers. Do you have any suggestions on where to look vs. CL... All of the roomshares I've looked into, do not want an additional animal, and I have a dog so that hasn't worked out.

Thanks!

Up to recently, I've used Craigslist several times to find roommates and housemates. I lived in Portland, Philly and NYC, with a cat.

I found Portland to be very difficult (in NYC and Philly I was looking at small apartments, Portland was typically houses) with renting rooms. I've had people flake out days before my move-in date or just be horrible house mates. Can you stay with a friend until you find your decent living situation? Having an animal is a pain, you just need to filter your results and hope for the best. As for finding people to live with, although I was in my young 20's, I had a rule of not living with anyone under the age of 30. I ended up finding a married couple who owned a home that just wanted some disposable income and have a body around. It ended up working out great, just have faith.

I would try posting a note on the bb of various retailers in the neighborhood you wish to live in. Meet anyone who contacts you a couple times at a coffee shop first, don't go to the home of stranger.
