I'm kind of curious on the success rate of these two finding and landing a long term job within the first two weeks of moving to Portland or west of Portland.

She's a nurse and I'm a contractor and HVAC/R tech. What do you guys think?

Nurses are almost needed anywhere and so are HVAC/R techs both in commercial and residential.

Two weeks? You are having fun at our expense right? You've heard the rumors no doubt and want to put a unique spin on a well worn stereotype. It's been done. There is a doctor shortage, there is no shortage of qualified nurses anywhere except in the military. As for HVAC... I don't know but I suspect the same is true. OTOH if you know someone well placed in one of Portland's hospitals or if you know someone who owns a contracting firm all bets are off.

Maybe, but two weeks is very unrealistic.

I'm not sure on details but I think the average time of unemployment is 30 weeks, I read this a few months ago.

I know two nurses who got jobs in Portland within a month after graduation, I'm not sure of any other details. I'm sure the school had some kind of program, but everyone keeps saying nurses are in demand.

As for a HVAC tech, my cousin moved to Portland to live with me in 2007. He was a HVAC tech among many other field tech positions. He got a job within a week testing circuit boards for 20 bucks an hour (which isn't too bad for that kind of work in PDX). He moved to Boston in 2009 and got a job fixing coffee machines at a pretty good salary and now lives in Baltimore, got a HVAC job.

My advice is......A tradesman is always in demand. If you can fix HVAC, you can do a lot. Keep your options open, just give yourself more than two weeks. Even if you recieved a job offer your first day in PDX, many companies take a while to give you a start day.

You might be able to do all right, but do yourself a favor and prepare for the worst case scenario.

Peacehealth is moving their regional center to Vancouver---just a cross the bridge from Portland--might be something for your wife to look into.
