I am seriously considering relocating to Portland from the east coast. What is your advice on best ways for a 23-year old to meet people? I've heard that there are a lot of transplants in Portland -- are there groups to help meet people (yes, these are cheesy but helpful)? I do not know a soul in the city and am tired of the trite "meet people at your workplace" answer.

Thanks!

You could try meetup-dot-com

Search the Portland, OR area (at the Meetup dot com web site) for:
- East Coast-ers (specifically for East Coast new Transplants)
- New In Town (more generally for newbies)

I have not been to either meet up groups so I cannot vouch for them.

I never had much luck meeting potential friends in the workplace. But I did meet people who turned out to be long time friends by joining groups and taking classes (usually fun ones) in the subjects in which I was interested. For example, in acting class and Science Fiction groups.

When you arrive here, take a look online in whatever you think might be of interest to you and/or check out the classifieds in the Portland Tribune or the Oregonian. I don't know about meet up groups from personal experience but they sound like a good idea.
