Could anyone recommend a moving company that you used to relocate from California to Portland?

Also, can I bring house-plants from CA to OR?

Thanks,
Evelyn

Yes, you may bring house plants.

Have you considered using moving pods? There are several who serve Portland, you will need to research who serves your current community. Often you can hire professionals to pack the pods locally.. that is the most critical part of the process. Unpacking can be done incrementally so pack what you need first in one pod, or at the unload end of a pod. You really need a flat unloading zone, by the way.

Your mover selection should start at your end as those are the people who will pack your things and will drive the truck. One thought, however. Unless you are emotionally attached to specific items why move them? Sell them and buy in Portland. You will be packing your fine china and probably transporting it yourself in any case.

The reason why I feel comfortable with the above is that we moved from the Seattle area last year and I spent a lot of time analyzing our move as we waited for our home to sell. In the end we used our son's big box trailer to transport the stuff we didn't sell or donate as a part of a HUGE downsizing process. Because we live on a hill we couldn't unload the trailer on site, we stored the trailer and unloaded in small bites until we got the the really heavy stuff where we hired a local mover to move it in.

we just moved here recently from California. I thought about PODS, but that's hard to do unless you have a house with a driveway or whatever (I doubt our apartment manager would allow us to let it sit in the parking lot for any length of time). Plus, my husband has a bad back and can't help me with any lifting.

So we ended up getting a Uhaul and hiring people to load and unload from the Uhaul website. We ended up spending about $700 for the truck (4-5 days) and loading/unloading help on both sides. But it really depends on how much furniture you have. We don't have a lot of stuff so the moving van wasn't too huge to drive here comfortably.

PODS and other similar services also have lists of loading & unloading laborers.

The issue I have had with UHaul is that you reserve a truck and when you go to pick it up there may be concerns about it's condition. Often they don't have a backup to offer. If you need to move that day you are in one heck of a jam.

You can park a pod on the street, the City issues a permit (for a price). There is one container service that can handle curb unloading as I recall, all the others have a door at the end. But, you do need a flat, or almost flat, loading & unloading zone. That said, I have seen them on Vista St, hardly a level surface.

We moved from NY to Portland at the end of August and researched PODS, moving companies, etc. We found the quote we got from PODS to be quite high -- higher than some moving companies, actually. (And that was w/o moving the stuff into/out of the pods.)

We interviewed about five interstate moving companies, making sure to get a guaranteed price. With a guaranteed priced, your final bill can be lower, but never higher than what you were quoted. And the amounts we were quoted varied drastically. We checked complaints against companies and found some really scary tales out there for interstate moves. (But then I guess people don't usually post when things went well and the move was uneventful.) We chose Wheaten Van Lines (sp?) and were so very happy with our driver and moving experience. Our driver showed up early and worked hard, packing the few items we'd requested the company pack (if you pack your TV, etc. and it's broken during the move, you're screwed. Or you get minimal reimbursement. If they break it, it's their fault and the reimbursement is much higher.) We went with additional insurance, which if also recommended.
