Greetings! My family has about a 50% chance of moving to Portland late summer due to a new job. I know Portland is a politically liberal town. My husband is a libertarian, so he can be very conservative on many things, but socially quite liberal. Is he going to have a hard time in Portland? Are there more conservative people around? Yes, he supports Trump. Makes me gag, but I love him anyways (husband,
Not trump).

The progressives in Portland appear to be narrow minded and extremely intolerant. Unless you closely toe the progressive party line, you can expect hostility.

Really it depends on where in the Portland Metro you want to locate. Suburbs are much less extreme liberal than the inner city, but still quite liberal.

I no longer live in Portland but I did for decades. I keep in touch with my many friends there via Facebook. There are Trump supporters among them. In fact, one has many other friends unknown to me (different interests, different circles) who are Trump supporters. So, yes, Trump supporters can be found in Portland.

He won't have trouble unless he really worries about what other think. As a Libertarian, he probably doesn't too much.

The Portland liberal is wimpy, quiet and really does not mess with arguing his/her points. They do not like confrontation unless they are running in a silly pack downtown (look up Portland Antifa).

He will have no trouble finding people to commiserate with. There are plenty of like minded people here.

He will be frustrated with local and state gov't corruption brought on by the liberal policies enacted (which solve nothing). He may also be extremely frustrated when he sees how much Oregon takes from paycheck to finance these whacky policies.

This is nothing to worry about if whatever brings you here is good opportunity. Go for it. Just understand pro's and con's.

Frankly, there are plenty of folks here who welcome more like your husband

Yes, I am one, I worked with a lot of people who were conservatives, and half the households in my culdesac are conservatives. While none of us likes Portland politics, we deal with it. We just vote our way and deal with it.

Yes, a lot of them. But they don't seem any more intolerant or hostile than many Trump supporters. The extremists on both sides seem bent on destroying the country, and not just in Portland. Just my observation.

It's not so much an overt hostility towards anyone who is not ultra-progressive, but it's the way the city is because of the ultra-progressive. Rampant homelessness, funding for a bridge that doesn't allow any vehicle traffic (public transportation and bike, food traffic only.) Meanwhile neglecting roadways which have been in disarray for decades. The politics have slowly created a progressive mecca which can now be seen in every corner of Portland society.

One other general comment, there is assumption you are liberal. So interactions at coffee shops, your hair stylist, etc. There is just an unspoken assumption you're all for leftist policies and candidates.
